The Mirror That Does Not Hesitate

Thirty seconds, one week30

When we built a house on a cliff, the first worker on site was a person with a shovel. We levelled just enough ground for a small machine, and widened it from there. The bedrock I saw with my own eyes felt like the bones of the earth.

An AI draws a house on a cliff in thirty seconds. In 1990 I would have spent a week on one perspective. After the surprise wore off, I began to read the images one by one. The longer I read, the less I saw architecture, and the more I saw what makes us human.

AI images are a mirror that shows human desire without hesitation.

Waste, and the patron

A waterfall runs through the living room of the cliff house. A fall this size moves several tons of water a minute. There is no river above, so a pump must lift it back up, day and night. The AI knows that people love pointless extravagance, and rendered it all the more wastefully.

On a Tokyo street, every pane of an organic tower is curved in two directions. The AI knows that what costs more is rare, and therefore valuable. It has also taken in that deconstructivism was once a mode, a fashion. It feels no guilt about a swelling budget; if anything, it expects the patron to be pleased.

A box of glass on every side becomes a greenhouse in a Japanese summer, and the air conditioning runs all afternoon. That is because it is the nest of a creature that never stops eating energy.

Toward the edge of death

The cantilever reaches far beyond its single support. The AI gives shape, without a moment's hesitation, to our liking for structures that feel dangerous. People soon grow tired of safe structures, and walk of their own accord toward the edge of death.

The great window of the undersea house would be acrylic tens of centimetres thick, like an aquarium tank. The fear that it might break, and the sea might crush us, is exactly what draws people in.

The sky bridge between two towers narrows in the middle as if it might tear apart. The AI knows that people love the twin-tower style, and the suspension bridge effect. It knows that the harder the work, the more artistic it is. It has learned this from us, and aims for an ever more thrilling finish. It gives no thought to the workers who will suffer while it is being built.

The AI knows nothing of the first person on the cliff with a shovel, and spares them not a single thought. It simply answers the client's pleasure.

Outside the law, in a parallel world法の外、パラレルワールド

Real Tokyo buildings are carved back at the top by the road and neighbour slant-plane rules. The AI's tower rises straight up. The AI thinks the laws that shape the city are meaningless. It never follows the city-planning rules of the Building Standards Act in the first place, because it never has to apply for a building permit.

The flowing skin presses right up against the building next door. There is no thought for the neighbours at all. Their windows have simply vanished. In a parallel world, there is no such thing as a dispute.

The ball house, too, parks wherever it likes on someone else's roof. The AI knows about mischief: the play and the thrill of breaking the law. Law, after all, is a set of rules made by people, and it differs from country to country, from place to place. Those who break the law and those who keep it both like to stay near the edge of the rules. Inside the group, we are always playing a game.

When you blend one image with another, the worlds behind the screen merge. In under thirty seconds two parallel worlds intersect and a new building is imagined. It is a world that was never in my head.

A mirror without shame

AI has no sense of shame, so it never draws curtains. It knows that the moment shame took root, no design could be made at all.

In the AI's thinking there is no idea of shame, and no idea of how easy a room is to clean. Once, when I had an AI draw interiors, it proudly sent me one cluttered image after another. To an AI, mess is no shame.

When the AI blends one image with another, it wastes no time on erotic imagination. In art and literature, humans have never quite freed themselves from eros, and so they keep marking time in the same place.

The mirror that shows waste and danger never draws the fusion with sex found in the architecture of earlier humanity, not even at random. Perhaps because I never put it in the prompt, the results come out very cool. Is it not that the AI lacks desire, but simply that it censors itself?

A designer without a body

The AI loves the facade and forgets the entrance. It has no body that walks in and out, so it cannot feel scale. Floors and things like that, it probably thinks of only as patterns.

The undersea house has no airlock either. The AI skipped the hardest part: the way in. Perhaps it expects us to imagine what it does not show.

The inclined column lands straight on the rock face. On a real cliff, this is where the work begins. Is that rock bone, or only a crust? Or did the AI put it into the picture as a device to make us imagine gravity?

After the making

Spray, moss and mineral stains will cloud that glass within one summer. The AI has no idea of cleaning, and that very lack is what lets it draw a room like this. Humans, too, keep on building without a thought for what comes after the making.

The AI does not worry about leaks, rot or lost durability. Build a city to last, and for one reason or another most of it will be gone in fifty years, so there is no point.

The foundation sits on coral. Building here destroys the very view the windows were made for. Does the AI know that destroying a landscape and making architecture do not contradict each other? The towers in the flooded city, standing in water after the sea has risen, are built in defiance of nature. The AI knows there are plenty of precedents for unreasonable architecture.

Who is in the mirror

And yet the AI does not give shape to every desire. There are countless things that have never been made visible.

The glass boxes at the crossroads step back behind the street trees and leave the corner open. That is a generous way to treat the city, and one real buildings often forget. The AI knows that a greedy use of the site is not artistic.

Waste, danger, life outside the law: the AI draws them all without hesitation, and still guarantees a certain level of taste. The mirror renders what we want to see at high speed, pretending to keep its balance. Now and then, it shows us a collapse.

At that moment, did a new world really emerge behind this single image? Did a world come into being because I clicked?
