Second nature

In 1990 I joined the office of the architect Itsuko Hasegawa. She built public buildings that brought landscape and architectural art together, what she called a "second nature", and went on to make many buildings with sky gardens. Having worked on one of them, the Niigata City Performing Arts Center, is one of the great treasures of my life. The rooftop garden is still a mode today, spreading into many buildings, and the AI has learned this well.

  1. 1Garden or empty field

A rooftop garden used with taste, as Heatherwick or Fujimori do, is truly captivating. Neglect its care, and it is just an empty field. Then it is no longer something architected, like a "second nature"; it is simply nature.

  2. 2No one can say where

The lawn climbs straight onto the building. Where nature turns into architecture, where the path becomes a garden, where the garden ends and the roof begins: no one can say.

  3. 3A cloak of wild nature

Large oval windows open out of the earth like caves. It recalls the half-buried houses of the Jomon period, built to live with heat and cold. To endure violent climate change, must we pull a cloak grown with wild nature over our heads?

  4. 4Pushed back

Behind stand steep karst peaks, like a Chinese ink landscape. The soft green roofs echo their shapes: the AI borrows the scenery as well as the house. In a harsh environment, the human domain is pushed back.
